I’ve known this family since 1995, Karas Fish Tavern is run by three brothers; Chris in the kitchen, Aristos is your host out front and Captain Kostas supplying the catch from the family’s fishing boat every day. The name Karas is synonymous with quality fresh fish, and it’s regarded as one of the best fish restaurants in Cyprus, so its naturally a Cypriot’s favourite, and purely by reputation, they come from all over Cyprus to eat here !
When I asked Chris why they’re so popular, and he said, ”because we are a family of farmers and fishermen with the only fish restaurant in the area that’s not on the coast, so we don’t have the backdrop of the sea to compliment your meal, which means we have to make sure we get it right, from the freshest of seafood caught daily on our family’s fishing boat, to the vegetables grown on our family’s farm, then preparing it and cooking it to perfection in the kitchen, and a crew that’s been together for 20 years serving you with traditional Cypriot hospitality, that’s why” ! … Hmm, I can’t argue with that!
Naturally, their speciality is ‘Fish Meze’ which is a seasonal selection of seafood dishes cooked to perfection and brought to the table nice and slowly. Alternatively, you can make up your own Meze, choosing from the fresh fish fridges by the kilo and telling them how you’d like it cooked … There’s always fresh favourites like Kourkounes, Grouper, Red Mullet, Lavraki, Gopa, Kalamari, Cuttlefish, Prawns, Mussels, Oysters, Crab and the occasional Blue Fin Tuna that’s caught by friends of the family and shared of course 😉 and if you really want a treat, try the oven baked Sea Bass in Salt Crust … OMG !!!
Authentic Cypriot Kitchen
Naturally there’s also a full menu of traditional Cypriot and International dishes, with Angela in the kitchen recreating granny’s recipes perfected over the years, Kleftico that just falls off the bone, Moussaka, and authentic grills and all the side dishes, there’s a tasty kids selection, and they are happy to provide a Take-Away and Delivery service too .. Its also a fantastic choice to host your private party or wedding reception and they’ll always make you feel like one of the family …
Boasting one of the largest selections of local and international wines, beers and spirits, served by the glass or the bottle, to compliment your selection of cuisine, with a little advice or recommendation if you ask …
A little history
Their father was a fisherman, that would light the barbie every day for his fishing friends, but he was also a footballing Legend for both Anorthosis FC and his country, so much so his club named their training stadium after him, so expect to find lots of passion and all the big matches on a couple of big screens with a bias towards the Greek games of course.
Out the back of the taverna there’s a lagoon style swimming pool with a Pool Bar, with plenty of sunbeds, surrounded by mature trees and a big grassy lawn for the kids to play, shaded tables to relax and enjoy an ice cold drink, milkshakes, hot drinks and tasty snacks like Sushi, fresh fish and traditional grills. Lazy Lemon is a great place to hold celebrations and special events with regular live music and delicious buffet spreads.
This is a wonderful retreat, away from the maddening crowd, with low cost studios and one bed apartments. Kapparis is a small resort in itself with wonderful quaint bays, along a rugged coastline and a selection of traditional tavernas, full of Cypriot hospitality and even British style pubs full of local residents as well as a regular stream of tourists …
