Sunday Lunch
I was invited by the eminent Kieran to sample Sunday Lunch down at the Octagon Tavern in Vrysoules… and as I walked in I have to say, I just love the set up here … a gorgeous crazy paved garden terrace, partly covered with woven sails, mature trees, a windmill, an outside bar, arches, wooden bench style tables and comfy seating, and lots of regular happy customers …

Busy Bees
It was busy when I arrived so I took a little space at the bar to chat to Kieran as I watched this well-oiled team working, maintaining health and hygiene protocols with masks and gloves … Kieran explained in fact, they are open every day with a full varied menu and they welcome local, expats and tbh absolutely everyone … he said “we are trying to put traditional Cypriot hospitality back, but with a fun environment” …

Time to Eat
When I was ready to eat they brought out my Sunday Lunch … one plate with a generous portion of sliced roast sirloin of beef, gammon and turkey, roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding and a sage and onion ball … at first I thought ‘where’s the veg?’ … then, out came a bowl of cauliflower cheese, and another with broccoli, carrots, peas and a gravy pot, oh, and a little bowl of pork scratching’s that were so delicious I asked for a portion to take away coz I knew my dog Roxy would just love to crunch into those, they happily obliged!!! …

Good Choice
The selection is varied to say the least with things like Soup of the day, Butterfly Prawns or Garlic Mushrooms for starters … and Honey Roast Gammon or a Trio of Meats for mains, and tbh, it was far too much for me to eat because I’d been warned by a good friend Alex to save some space for their Cheesecake, and I’m glad I did, it was just delicious … then I found out it was Alex that makes them 😉 … oh and btw, the two courses are only €14.50 …

Catch Up
While I waited, I had a look at their menu … A page full of Pub Grub, things like ‘On the Bone’ which is buffalo wings, BBQ pork ribs, onion rings, coleslaw and hand cut chips … the choice of Burgers sounded tempting, but next time I think I’ll go for The Vegetarian Platter, 2 Vegi Spring rolls, Halloumi fries, tortilla chips covered in melted cheese and spicy skin on potato wedges.

Asian Style
On the Main Course page, a few dishes took my eye especially the Singapore Special Curry, a mix of pork, prawns and chicken stir fried, with crispy vegetables in Chinese style sauce, a must next time or maybe the Cod Fillet steamed in oriental spices and vegetables just as tempting …

Turning over
The Hunters Chicken sounded lovely, Chicken breast wrapped in bacon, smothered in BBQ sauce and Cheddar cheese, mmm!, so to the Breaded scampi, Beef Chilli, and Five Bean Vegan Chilli … but I think Pork fillet in honey and mustard sauce is on my tick list … oh, and all these are under €10 …

A Must Visit
The Octagon has been here since 1987, but now in their 5th season Kieran, Kevin and the Stardust Variety Show crew took over the running of the tavern in April 2019 … When I asked them why? They said “because they wanted to offer a relaxed environment to enjoy good food, real drinks, alfresco style, with Quiz Nights on Tuesdays, Bingo and occasional events and entertainment to complement their show”, which btw is the best gig I’ve seen in my almost 30 years in Cyprus …
